Germany is considering acquiring thousands of new tanks and armored vehicles with the goal of meeting NATO force generation targets and strengthening deterrence against Russia.
The information was shared in several reports citing government and industry sources, revealing that the German Ministry of Defense is evaluating proposals to purchase up to 2,500 GTK Boxer infantry fighting vehicles and up to 1,000 Leopard 2 battle tanks.
The Leopard 2 tanks are produced by KNDS Deutschland (formerly known as Krauss-Maffei Wegmann) and Rheinmetall, while the Boxer is manufactured by ARTEC, a joint venture of the same companies.
Endorsed on June 25, the initiative is expected to cost €25 billion and, if approved, would support the formation of seven new combat brigades that Berlin has committed to creating for NATO in the coming decade.
